Uganda became closer this week as I went to the travel clinic in
West Bloomfield to get all of the required shots. No need to worry about Hepatits A, Polio, Typhoid, and Yellow Fever. I've been vaccinated! I was particularly nervous about the Yellow Fever shot because I had heard that it was the most painful of the shots. They didn't have single doses of the vaccine and so they had to specially mix enough for five people and stick us each within the hour. I was going to make friends with my Yellow Fever batch mates but no one seemed particularly friendly. Before the big shot, while the nurse mixed up the batch, a clinic worker I affectionately named "Yellow Fever Brenda" stamped my official government document saying that I had in fact been vaccinated. Check me out!
Finally it was time for the Yellow Fever shot. I was bracing myself for great pain but was pleasantly surprised! It was not at all as bad as I thought. Nurse Linda posed for this picture and stuck me quickly, and in no time had me laughing. She told me there might be some mild flu-like side effects but that I'll probably be fine. She informed me I'm not allowed to get pregnant for a while. I happily agreed. And that was it! I got my malaria pills and some antibiotics and I was on my way! I have one more shot to get next Friday and then I am medically ready for some Ugandan adventures. I cannot wait!
